A younger client asked me about this skincare trend, because it’s on TikTok and I had the same thought that you probably just had.
“What the $@&! is SLUGGING?
I told her, “Don’t tell me people are putting slugs on their faces now!” Thankfully the answer is no, they are not.
So, I did some research! The concept is to help those with dry/dehydrated skin retain moisture and prevent TEWL (transepidermal water loss) by applying a thick balm for overnight.
LOVE where this is going, RIGHT?!? Me too! I’m on eof those sufferers of chronic dry skin (thanks, Accutane) and get SO excited ABOUT MOISTURE!! Until, I saw that they were using petroleum based “healing” ointments. So, let’s briefly talk about those. Petroleum is a by product of petroleum refining, turning crude oil into other products we use like GASOLINE, diesel, jet fuel and yes, BEAUTY PRODUCTS.
According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, “when properly refined, petroleum has no know health concerns. However, with an incomplete refining history, petroleum could potentially be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs. PAHs are by products of organic material combustion, that is commonly stored in fats (in the body).”
Scary stuff! So, if you decide to give this slugging trend a try, or know someone who is, please stay away from any petroleum based product. Give your skin MORE than just the look of slug slime on your face and choose a NON TOXIC, 100% herbal, nutritive salve that will surely make you GLOW.
Age Gracefully,
Sara
